The Philips Ambilight 40PFL9705H 3D Ready LED TV

Generally, a TV without a Freeview HD tunor would not be counted among the best in the industry, but the Philips 40PFL9705H proves that this is not always the case. While the new TV from Philips doesn't offer access to the newest free high definition channels, it combines 3D technology with Blu-ray sharp imaging technology in order to generate an amazing visual experience.

The TV itself is 3D ready, but it does not feature an internal 3D transmitter. An external transmitter is used instead, which can be plugged into the rear of the television, then attached to the top of the TV with a piece of adhesive strip that comes in the box. Unless you already have a Wii or a different type of motion capture technology, the six inch 3D transmitter does not create too much clutter for you to deal with. The transmitter can also be set up on the desktop, where it is at its most stable.

Even though the desktop that comes with the TV can also function as a wall mount, the TV is better served off of the wall. While the TV is tiny compared to cathode ray tube displays, it now looks a little thick compared to other options on the market. This is due to the LED Pro technology used in the television, which backlights the image rather than lighting it from the side like some of the thinner TVs. The Philips 40PFL9705H screen also features something known as "Ambilight", which generates ambient light on the wall behind the television. This lowers the amount of strain suffered by the eyes and produces a more exciting visual display. This feature uses lighting strips on the back of the TV that produce ambient light which matches the image on the screen.

The TV offers a colorful, high contrast 3D image that beats 3D plasma TVs. Some concerns still exist for the 3D technology offered by the TV. The issues faced by the 3D technology of this TV are the same issues faced by all other 3D televisions. If an image is supposed to get very near the viewer, it looks like two distinct objects instead. When the depth of the image is less pronounced, the images are very clear and impressive.

While 3D may still be incomplete, the Philips 40PFL9705H beats other TVs when it comes to 2D images, hands down. The images are very clear and move smoothly. The TV blows audio competition out of the water with an attached subwoofer. Without separate speakers, the TV offers theater-like audio.

The user interface is attractive and easy to use. Device shortcuts can be added to the icon menu. Permanent shortcuts include those for TV, PC, Net TV, and USB.

Even without a Freeview HD or an internal 3D transmitter, the Philips 40PFL9705H is an excellent buy. The 3D tech is the best on the market, even if it hasn't been perfected, and the image processing exceeds anything else availabl
